“…psalms, hymns and spiritual songs…” Col 3:16

The bible tells us to ‘let the word of Christ richly dwell within [us].’ Col 3:16. In this way we are equipped to teach and admonish one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. You may have heard popular music writers and performers asked where their inspiration comes from. For the Christian singer or musician ‘His statutes become [their] songs.’ Ps 119:54. This tenet is fundamental to our belief of Christian music. The Lord’s word is our inspiration. Rather than writing music for the purpose of reaching out and touching people, we write music because we believe in a living God Who first reaches out and touched us.

“…sing us one of the songs of Zion…” Ps 137:3

What style of music do you think typifies Christian songs? Traditional organ and hymns? Modern electric guitar with delay effects and distortion? Reverb enhanced voices singing emotionally catchy power ballads? Are certain instruments and sounds more ‘godly’ than others? The classic grand piano more ‘pious’ than digital synthesizer? Famous composers who wrote music we may consider ‘classical’, were in fact ‘pop’ artists in their day. Hence we must understand the spirit and culture of Christian music, without imposing style and genre limitations because of personal opinion. The Old Testament accounts for 70 years the Lord’s people were taken captive by the kingdom of Babylon. Psalm 137 recounts their captors tormenting them saying, ‘Sing us one of the songs of Zion.’ Zion symbolizes the final dwelling place and hope of Christendom. Interestingly, the next verse from the psalmist reads, ‘How can we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?’ The diverse songs (plural) of Zion are summarized by the song (singular) of the Lord. The praise and worship led at The Chapel is not restricted to music genre, as if this achieves the righteousness of God. Rather, our hearts burn for the true culture of worship Jesus describes in the gospel of John. This is the truth about Christian music. Indeed as you listen and download the songs ministered by TCF, you will hear many musical genres. Our burden is to express the Lord’s song (singular), in whatever musical theme best communicates the heart of that song.

“…a new song in my mouth…”
Ps 40:3

If we consider our five human senses, we would normally cast music into the realm of hearing. Purposefully the psalmist writes, ‘He put a new song in my mouth… many will see and fear and will trust in the Lord.’ Perhaps you have not thought of songs as something you see. At Toowoomba Christian Fellowship we believe the songs of Zion, the Lord’s song, express His working in our life. He has real power to bring real change in the lives of those who seek Him. By proclaiming His word through music, we hope many can see our testimony and indeed the Lord Himself!

*Steps to get Songs from The Chapel on your iPhone, iPod or Media Player:

1. Download your selected track, or the whole album, and save it to your hard drive
2. Open the folder you downloaded and follow the instructions to un-zip it. Store the un-zipped folder in your usual music location on your computer.
3. Open iTunes and select, "File" - "Add Folder to Library" and navigate to the files/folder you just downloaded
4. Select the folder/file you just downloaded and click "Select Folder"
5. Connect your device and allow it to synchronise
6. Open your "Music" tab and locate the "Songs from The Chapel" Album, and drag it onto your device in the left column
7. After allowing your device to synchronise again, disconnect and enjoy your new music!
